This month’s schedule
You already got:
You will get (In order):
- The Devil is a Part Timer
We had quite the slide from a solid 27 points in Vinland Saga to 16 points in Yasuke. I love having Nick Mo. back for another review, but I always prefer for guests to love what they watch and we both agreed this was a bit of a miss. You guys should know I am a huge Netflix stan, but this certainly didn’t help my case. Overall, the show was great for black representation and opened the door for a fantastic store that just missed a bit on execution.
We continue to ride Randy’s birthday themed month home with The Devil is a Part Timer. Honestly, Randy has done pretty well so far. Randy did not pick Yasuke, but the other two have been solid, averaging 24.5! With his annual friend renewal coming up, this bodes well for his evaluation.
Next Month’s Schedule (In order)
- Ride Your Wave
- Director’s Cut (Our Monthly Check-ins like this)
- Love, Chunibyo, and other Delusions
- School Live
June had the excitement because of Randy’s birthday picks. July’s lineup is just as star studded. Not only are we getting five Thursdays this month, but we are getting three requests from followers and one from Randy. Ride Your Wave, Chunibyo, and Anohana were all widely requested and looked really fun and summer-y. This might not be true at all, but that is what I thought… and I make the schedule. School Live is a Randy request and he keeps giggling about it so I never know how to feel. But I was told to go in blind.
I am specifically excited for Ride Your Wave because it is a romance and romance is prime. Because if life hasn’t broken my heart enough, I like to crush the pieces when the butt of my anime heel. On top of that, it is a movie! Do I review enough movies? No. Am I trying to fix that? Yes. So maybe one movie every two months or so. We simply can’t afford to ignore movies like I have, so expect more moving forward.
So it’s been a couple months since we introduced “First Takes” on Instagram and Tiktok… and I hate them. I really don’t feel like they add any value. It is supposed to be a fun little post about what I think the show will be, but oftentimes I feel as if I am either stating the obvious or leading people in the wrong direction about a show. There just seems to be no obvious value added. What do *you* get from me doing a first take? I couldn’t tell you in a convincing way. So I will stop.
In their place, I want to do more tiny video essays! I think some interesting thoughts sometimes and getting people’s opinions is really fun for me. Prior experience has told me that I do a really good job at having unpopular takes (see Darling In the Franxx pg. 64.) So get ready to explore some ideas with me moving forward. Some ideas that I have in mind are “What makes a show dark?”, “The worst trope in anime”, and “Does the main character getting the girl make the show better?”.
We are still undefeated in kickball! I accidentally smashed the ball into the face of the pitcher last game. Her sunglasses broke and she got hurt pretty badly. It was not good. I felt really bad. But we won that game. I am kicking well, fielding super well recently, and not kicking as many pop flies as I was a couple weeks ago.
When I am not working, watching anime, writing about anime, or playing kickball, I am practicing my violin and rollerblading! I am terrible at violin right now. I thought more of my upright bass skills would carry over but they have not… at all. My mom also pointed out it has been ten years since I played bass, so that might be part of it. Rollerblading has gone well. I am not falling as much, the wind feels nice, and it’s been a great way to become more familiar with my city.
Don’t Toy with me, Miss Nagatoro is pretty much the same every week and I still love it. We actually got a plot this past week too! Now Senpai has to compete against the Art Club President! I never expected to get much of a plot for this show outside of Senpai and Nagatoro’s relationship, but I am not sad about it. I imagine that this show will get a second season and it makes me wonder if the rest of the show will actually have a plot to follow… who could have guessed?
86 Eighty-Six is a show I picked up at the request of Randy. We joined for the mechs and the fighting and got a show about racism and facist society. Boy, was that a surprise. At this point, the show has only one or two episodes left and I look forward to it every week. Not only is it fun to have a show to look forward to with Randy, but the show is just dang good. There are so many details that really make the show phenomenal. Never would I have thought I would be having a discussion about the flowers in a character’s room. I was never that kid in english class. But I feel like you have to with this show and I would need to watch it two or three times to truly appreciate all the details.
The Way of the House Husband is a giant win for Netflix. I finally have a great example of a show that I can retort with when people say that Netflix always screws up anime. The show feels more like a living comic than true “anime animation” but I love it. The dialog is fantastic, the characters are hilarious, and the plot is just amazing. I mean, how could you not love a Yakuza mob boss turned house husband? He’ll break ya kneecaps and feed ya a home cooked meal.
Osamake: Romcom where the Childhood friend won’t Lose is a terrible show. The plot makes no sense, the animation is unimpressive, all the girls in the show are childhood friends, and on top of all of that, childhood actors are boring to me. There is not really anything going for it so I only watch it when I truly have nothing better to do. My quick take, don’t watch it.
This feels like more anime than I normally watch outside the reviews but I have been having a lot of fun watching along with all the other fun things going on in my life!
For now, the next review is up next Thursday… cut!
